Braveship: Ambition and humility in balance with Carlton Myers

The Braveship journey was born from a deep need: to explore leadership not as an abstract formula, but as a living, everyday practice made of choices, doubts, and balance. With this vodcast, I set out to meet extraordinary individuals who embody change with authenticity, to investigate those “balancing acts” that accompany anyone who wants to evolve and lead with awareness. In each episode, we aim to move beyond clichés and get closer to the essence of courage, responsibility, and method.

In this new episode, the conversation is with someone who has made the balance between individual talent and team spirit the key to his success: Carlton Myers, one of the greatest figures in Italian basketball.

Between humility and ambition: finding the right balance

How do we balance humility and ambition? This is the question that shapes our dialogue.

With Carlton, I explored everyday situations, challenging his perspective: are our actions driven by humility or ambition? As often happens, the answer does not lie in extremes, but in the ability to find a dynamic balance between respect for others and the desire to stand out.

I immediately felt at ease speaking with him, because he conveys the true essence of being a champion, both in sport and in life. With the honesty of someone who has shared the same court, he told me about his journey—his talent, his setbacks, and his achievements. A success that came when he realized that individual excellence truly grows only when it is opened up to others and guided by an awareness of one’s own limits.

Talent, on its own, tends to fade. It becomes real strength only when it is shared, examined with honesty, and placed at the service of those around us. To me, this is one of the most authentic formulas for success.

Learning to lose in order to win

Ambition, often fueled by talent, is it always a tool for achieving success? Or can it become an obstacle when it goes too far?

Carlton Myers offers a clear perspective: ambition has value when it is paired with openness to others. It is a powerful drive—but it must be managed.

One of the most surprising moments in our conversation was about defeat. When I think of victories, I remember many. But Carlton told me, with great honesty, that he remembers his losses even more. And it is from those that he learned the most important lessons.

Defeats, often seen as moments to forget, instead become essential testing grounds. Opportunities to pause, reflect, understand what didn’t work, and start again with greater awareness. A true form of personal “debugging.”

From this conversation, I take away a clear lesson: to truly become successful, we must first learn how to lose—and how to learn from it. That is where growth is built, both personally and professionally.

This episode of Braveship is an invitation to rethink success as a balance between ambition and humility, between individual talent and the ability to share it, between victories and defeats.
