Truth and empathy: is a balance possible? We find out in this episode of Braveship
4 June
The Braveship journey was born from a deep need: to explore leadership not as an abstract formula, but as a living, everyday practice made of choices, doubts, and balance. Through this vodcast, I set out to meet extraordinary individuals who embody change with authenticity, in order to investigate those “balancing acts” that accompany anyone striving to evolve and lead with awareness. In each episode, we aim to move beyond clichés and get closer to the essence of courage, responsibility, and method.
In this new episode, the conversation is with a professional who has made the pursuit of truth and the quality of dialogue the core of her work: Silvia Boccardi. As a journalist covering some of the most pressing issues of our time—from wars and human rights to healthcare and migration—Silvia faces a complex challenge every day: telling the truth without losing sight of the impact words can have on people.
Truth and empathy: a possible balance
Honesty is a duty. But is it an absolute duty? Or is it possible to tell even the most uncomfortable truths while considering the people who will receive them?
This is the question at the heart of our conversation.
Meeting Silvia helped me broaden my perspective on a topic that concerns all of us. In her work, truth is never a shortcut. On the contrary, it requires listening, comparison, and the ability to embrace different points of view. For Silvia, there is no single, absolute truth. Instead, there are many forms of what is “true,” each shaped by different experiences, contexts, and perspectives, all deserving to be heard and understood before being judged.
In this constant commitment to listening, I found a strong connection with the values of Braveship. Because leadership, like journalism, requires the courage to engage with complexity without giving in to oversimplification.
Words play a central role in this process. They are not merely tools for conveying information, but instruments of responsibility. The way we choose to communicate can either create distance or foster understanding.
Telling the truth without causing harm
One of the aspects that struck me most during my conversation with Silvia was her perspective on feedback. At work, as in life, we often find ourselves having to express difficult opinions or communicate something that another person may not want to hear.
How can we be honest without sounding harsh? How can we tell the truth without sacrificing respect?
Silvia offers a valuable perspective: transparency and empathy are not opposing values. On the contrary, they can strengthen one another. The challenge is not choosing between honesty and kindness, but finding the words that allow both to coexist.
During the episode, we also reflected on some everyday expressions that, often without us realizing it, can sound harsh or unnecessarily divisive. The result was a practical discussion about the power of language and the possibility of transforming communication that hurts into communication that helps people grow.
In a world where everyone seems to have absolute certainty about complex and divisive issues, Silvia Boccardi reminds us that true courage does not lie in raising our voice, but in listening, understanding, and communicating complexity without losing clarity.
This episode of Braveship is an invitation to rethink the relationship between truth and leadership, between transparency and respect, between the duty to speak our minds and the responsibility to do so in the right way.
