Leadership through words: I discuss this with Vera Gheno

The Braveship journey was born from a deep need: to explore leadership not as an abstract formula, but as a living, everyday practice made of choices, doubts, and balance. Through this vodcast, I set out to meet extraordinary individuals who embody change with authenticity, to investigate those “balancing acts” that accompany anyone who wants to evolve and lead with awareness. In each episode, we aim to move beyond clichés and get closer to the essence of courage, responsibility, and method.

In this episode, the conversation focuses on something that connects us all—and sometimes divides us: words. The guest is Vera Gheno, a sociolinguist who combines academic rigor with an exceptional ability to communicate and engage a wider audience.

Words: distance or common ground?

Do words divide us, or can they become a shared space where, in our individual differences, we find ways to understand each other? This is where the conversation begins.

My work, like many others, is largely made of words. Even the most practical activities require communication: organizing, aligning, understanding. Words are the tool we use the most, and for this reason alone, they deserve our full attention. They are quite literally “between” us.

In this exchange, I was reminded of how words can act as bridges rather than trenches. A shared space where we make a tangible effort to understand one another. Even when language sounds inappropriate or insensitive, it is often not about intent, but about habit.

From Vera Gheno, I learned a powerful principle: when used consciously, words empower people. And true leadership is not just about speaking well, but about listening and enabling the words of others.

The power of silence and listening

Another key theme of the conversation is the value of silence. In a time when having access to the internet often makes us feel entitled to speak about anything, choosing to listen becomes almost revolutionary.

All leaders know how to speak. But do they really know how to engage in dialogue?

Vera Gheno introduces the concept of “active silence”: not an absence, but an intentional space dedicated to others’ words. A silence that is not indifference or withdrawal, but attention, presence, and genuine listening. In a context where conversations often turn into overlapping monologues, rediscovering this dimension can deeply improve the quality of our relationships.

From this perspective, leadership is not about having the last word, but about giving others the dignity of having a voice. That is where real communities are built.

And what should we do when someone uses words we perceive as inappropriate or offensive? Vera offers a practical approach: “interpretative charity.” Giving people the opportunity to explain themselves, suspending immediate judgment. Because very often, behind the “wrong” words, there is no harmful intent—just unexamined habits.

This episode of Braveship is an invitation to slow down, to listen, and to choose words more consciously. Because it is precisely within the shared space of language that relationships, leadership, and the future are built.
